How to Successfully Ask for That Raise You Deserve

Here’s how to ask for a raise if  you think it’s time for your hard work to be rewarded.

There comes a time in our working lives when we want more, and by this I mean, we need an additional financial compensation to reward our effort and progress in the company or organization where we work.

Although in most cases this salary increase comes alone (well, along with more responsibilities), sometimes we must lobby to get it. It may sound a little difficult, but it’s not too bad if you are well prepared to do it. Here are some tips:

1.- Evaluate yourself: You must be sure that you are doing an impeccable job and not only fulfilling your duties. Ask yourself if you are giving that extra that is needed, if you are being proactive enough, and if you are willing to show team loyalty to your company or organization to the end.

If your answers are affirmative, continue to #2 (if they are not, it is time to make a change and achieve that goal).

2.- Analyze the big picture: Consider the current economic situation of your workplace. It is important to know if budget cuts are being made or if the business has not been profitable this year.

If the outlook is favorable, continue to #3 (if not, wait a minimum of 3 months to reevaluate the situation).

3.- Make an appointment: Here starts the scary part, but we can make it simple. Send an email to your boss to set a date when you can talk about it. Don’t worry – here’s an example for you to copy:

I would like to know if it is possible to schedule an appointment with you this week to talk about my work performance and my future with the company.

I thank you for your time and look forward to your response.”
